Laser hair removal uses technology in which a beam of light is applied to unwanted hair on various parts of the body. This light is a specific wavelength that targets the melanin—the pigment in the hair that gives it color, in the hair follicle. When the light enters the follicle, it is converted to heat energy that destroys / inactivates the follicle, preventing the hair from growing again.

There are certain physical characteristics that make some people better candidates for laser hair removal than others. Specifically, skin tone and hair color are the most important. Blonde, red, white, and grey hair do not respond well to laser hair removal because of the lack of pigment in the hair follicle. Patients with darker hair are traditionally the ideal candidate.

Our laser hair removal system includes all three “Gold Standard” hair removal wavelengths making it the ideal solution for all patient skin types and all types of hair. Our laser includes the 1064nm YAG laser, an 810nm diode laser, and a 755nm Alexandrite laser.

The Alexandrite laser delivers a 755nm light wavelength proven most effective for fair skin types, specifically, types I and II on the Fitzpatrick scale. This wavelength is considered the best for removing fine, vellus hair. The Alexandrite laser can penetrate as deep as hair can grow, up to 5mm.

The 810nm Diode laser hair removal system is preferred for skin types III and IV; however, it remains effective for skin types I and II. Compared to the Alexandrite, the 810nm Diode delivers a longer wavelength of light capable of penetrating the patient’s hair follicle while causing less epidermal injury. This is a safer treatment option for patients with darker skin.

YAG wavelengths can treat a wide range of skin types, I through VI, but is most effective on skin types V and VI. This laser is optimal for removing unwanted body hair on people with darker skin tones, as lasers with shorter wavelengths cannot always provide safe treatment. The YAG wavelength offers outstanding hair removal results without causing unnecessary skin damage.

Hair grows in cycles, making it necessary to receive a series of treatments. This varies from patient to patient. Each treatment is spaced between 4-6 weeks apart and a minimum of 6 treatments is recommended.

There is no downtime associated with this treatment and patients may resume their normal activities. Avoid picking or scratching skin, do not use any other hair removal during treatment (waxing, electrolysis, or tweezing). Wash and pat dry for 3 days and on the 4th day start gently exfoliating. SPF is always recommended post treatment. Be advised that treated hair can take one to two weeks to be excreted from the body - to fall out. Feel free to shave between treatments. Do not wax, thread, tweeze, or use depilatory products—this will remove the hair follicles, making it impossible to remove the hair with laser. Do not exercise; take hot showers or use hot tubs or saunas for 12-48 hours.

Most areas require six-to-eight treatments. Ideally, they should be four to six weeks apart. However, depending upon your skin tone, and hair color and density, this may vary. Your technician will be able to provide you with a more precise estimate during your consultation.

Absolutely! Laser hair removal is both safe and effective. However, it is a clinical procedure. As such, there is a potential for complications. Fortunately, they are minimal and seldom dangerous, particularly when the necessary precautions are taken.
